Trivia #4: SAP is a well-known, global software company.  But Did you know that…

SAP was founded in 1972 by five IBM engineers (Dietmar Hopp, Hans-Werner Hector, Hasso Plattner, Klaus Tschira, Claus Wellenreuther) who acquired an early version of the software from Big Blue in exchange for 8 percent of founding stock given to IBM.

The first SAP Logo was  developed on the kitchen table in one of the founders’ home in rural Germany.

SAP stands for Systemanalyse und Programmentwicklung  or “System Analysis and Program Development.” That was later changed to Systeme, Anwendungen und Produkte in derDatenverarbeitung or “Systems, Applications and Products in Data Processing”

SAP first product was SAP R/1, a financial accounting software meant to be part of a real-time business data processing package.

SAP’™s first client was Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI), a British company that is now a subsidiary of Dutch conglomerate AkzoNobel. They used to develop the payroll and accounting programs instead of using punch cards.

SAP is now the one of the largest independent software manufacturer.
